Program 05 · New for 2026

Generation
Defiance.

The protest generation is already leading. We back them to win.

The Challenge

The youngest continent
deserves a future.

Africa is the youngest continent on earth, and its young people are the driving force of its democracy movements. From protest movements to civic tech, a new generation is refusing to inherit dictatorship. What they lack is not courage or ideas. It is training, money, and networks.

Traditional funding rarely reaches youth-led groups: they are too new, too informal, too fast-moving for conventional grant cycles. Generation Defiance is built for how young organisers actually work.

What This Program Does

Inside the work.

Youth Democracy Fellowship

An intensive fellowship for the continent's most promising young organisers: campaign strategy, civic organising, movement security, and leadership under pressure, taught by practitioners who have lived it. Fellows leave with skills, a plan, and a network.

Seed Grants

Fast, flexible funding for youth-led civic initiatives, sized for grassroots reality and delivered without the bureaucracy that locks young groups out. Small money, moved quickly, at the moment it matters.

Pan-African Peer Network

Organisers who have faced a shutdown, a smear campaign, or a mass arrest hold knowledge others need. The network connects fellows and alumni across borders for peer support, joint campaigns, and rapid solidarity.

The Program at a Glance

Built to deliver.

i.

Who it serves

Young organisers and youth-led civic initiatives across the region, with priority for those working in closing or closed civic space and those beyond the reach of traditional funders.

ii.

How we deliver

Cohort-based fellowship training, micro-grants with light-touch reporting, and an alumni network that turns individual talent into a connected generation of democratic leadership.

iii.

What success looks like

A pipeline of trained, connected young leaders. Youth-led initiatives that survive and scale. A generation prepared to lead democracies, not just demand them.
