About Us

We are the
resistance.

Authoritarianism in Africa is a coordinated, transnational project. For too long, those defending democracy have fought back in isolation. Defiance Against Dictatorship was created to change that.

The Moment

Africa's democratic future is
being decided now.

A record wave of elections is sweeping the continent, and with it a coordinated assault on the freedoms that make elections meaningful. In the past year alone, the region has seen opposition supporters detained by the thousands, elections stripped of real competition, and civic space formally downgraded in country after country.

Yet the demand for democracy has never been stronger. Across Africa, citizens consistently say they want more freedom, more accountability, and more voice, even as governments supply less of all three. That gap between what citizens demand and what autocrats allow is where DAD works.

Our Story

Forged in the fight.

DAD wasn't conceived in a quiet boardroom or a university hall. It was forged in the heat of an active democratic struggle: the fight to protect Zimbabwe's constitution from mutilation by a regime determined to entrench its power.

On those frontlines we saw two things. First, the extraordinary courage of citizen-led movements. Second, the strategic gaps that leave that courage exposed: the need for specialized legal tools, digital protection against state surveillance, and a global megaphone to carry the fight beyond national borders. DAD was built to be the strategic ally we wished we had. A pan-African shield designed to empower, equip, and amplify the defiance of the people.

Our Philosophy

Core beliefs that guide
every action.

i.

Tyranny knows no borders; neither can solidarity.

The playbook of modern authoritarianism is transnational. Autocrats learn from one another, share tactics, and coordinate repression. Our response must be equally connected. A victory for democracy in one nation creates momentum for all.

ii.

Power belongs to the people.

We are fiercely citizen-led and non-partisan. Our loyalty is not to any party or candidate, but to the integrity of the democratic process and the universal rights of the people. Change is driven from the grassroots up. Our role is to serve, not to lead.

iii.

Courage must be strategic.

We are committed to unwavering non-violence, not only as a moral principle but as the most powerful and sustainable path to democratic change. We pair frontline courage with rigorous, evidence-based strategy, so that sacrifice leads to victory.

We are not just an organization.
We are an architecture for resistance.
